Photography runs in my family. My grandmother was a fine amateur
photographer who had her own darkroom in the early 1900’s. |

With over 18 years’ experience as a professional photographer,
he still loves to shoot.

For some lucky few, life is a direct course. For me it has been a winding
path that makes most sense when viewed retrospectively. I got serious
about photography in the fifth grade, photographing cars with a friend and
selling the prints to a dealership. Looking back, I could say I have always
been a photographer, yet along the path to the present, there were many
side-journeys that taught me important lessons—for example, how to
conduct a business. |

Simplicity is a hallmark of both Dane’s work and his work methods.
His seasoned eye allows him to move quickly to the best angle, the best shot.
His naturalistic style eschews the fussy, the over-planned, the trendy,
instead embracing an almost Asian “less is better” philosophy that seeks to
reveal the deep truth of things.

I am mostly self-educated as a photographer, with strong influences by
the greats—Ruth Bernhardt, Brett Weston, Ansel Adams, and Imogene
Cunningham. |

DG Studio, just northwest of downtown Tacoma, holds a private collection of
photographs by each of these artists.
