Architectural Photography
Dane Gregory Meyer Photography | Architectural Photographer
Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Olympia, Spokane
Architectural photography is one of Dane Meyer's two main areas of concentration.
"Every building has its own unique feeling or energy," Dane notes. "You find that energy in its intended purpose, its overall structure and synergy with its environment, the way it interacts with light, the ways people move through it and use it, and its functional and aesthetic details. In my work, I try to tap into that energy, that distinct personality. To do that, I need a bit of time with a building, to sit with it and observe it, and even more than that, to feel it. My physical eyes are important, of course, but it has to go beyond that, to something more subtle and intuitive."
"When I'm hired to do an architectural photography job," he continues, "my work is to render all of that into a 2-d art form, the photograph. As a commercial photographer, its equally important for me to keep sight of the purpose of the job, the reason the client hired me, which is usually one kind of marketing or another. Communication about the exact use or uses of the photographs is important, and I think that communication and cooperation with my clients is something that I'm good at. I certainly try to be."
"Good architectural photography also requires a lot of technical skill," Dane further observes. "Balancing indoor and outdoor light, working with perspective, capturing the flow of a building, incorporating people as artistic elements, and of course the basics of lighting and composition, all require a high degree of experience and expertise. The work back in the office, the post-production or editing work, is also important. It's where the raw images go from good to great. I have years of experience with all of this. Even if I'm at a shoot for just a couple hours, there's 30 years behind every shot."
Dane Meyer has a studio in Tacoma, Washington but shoots on location throughout Washington, Oregon and California, as well as beyond.
